The second volume by Chris Ellis in the series is intended to give guide to anyone contemplating a US prototype layout but who doesn't have the space for one the basement empires that feature so frequently in the American magazines. In it the reader will find a large number of articles showing layouts that can be built and operated enjoyably in more modest spaces.
As before, Mr Ellis has reused articles that have featured in his previous magazines, suitably adapted to the revised format. All feature trackplans that be used or modified to suit a specific project, along with their descriptions.
As well as those, there are some chapters that give background information on what short lines are and suitable motive power. There are also ones on actual short lines that show how the real thing operates.
Sadly, like the previous volume, it must be said that the photo reproduction lets down the written words. In order to keep costs down, it is assumed, they are all monochrome but the resolution is not very good and much detail is unfortunately lost.
That said, for anyone considering a small adventure in modelling the US scene, it is very good value for money and deserves attention.
