The Omega 3000 was aimed at the enthusiastic driver who needed a large comfortable 6-cylinder saloon car but still wanted a manual gearbox, a limited-slip differential and a more sporting chassis set-up than was usually found on comfort-focused executive cars such as the GSI's cousin, the Opel Senator B. General Motors had previously used 2-door versions of larger models such as the Opel Monza and Commodore A/B coupés to fill this niche but the second generation Carlton and Senator range didn't feature a 2-door bodyshell so the more performance-focused 3000 was developed instead. This proved an astute commercial decision as it was greeted enthusiastically by the automotive press and sold strongly throughout Europe.
