Description

CORGI VANGUARD VA11910B 1:43 O SCALE Ford Taunus TC2 2.0 Ghia Jupiter Red LHD (Germany)

The Ford Taunus existed in various forms from 1939 but had always been developed and produced in Germany as a stand-alone product. However, the 1970 Taunus TC was a joint project with Ford's other European subsidiary in Britain, and was, with minor sheet-metal differences, the same as the Cortina Mk3. It was a wholly new design, the dynamics of which were much praised when launched, and featured a new floorpan, suspension and engines. Ford therefore tasked Uwe Bahnsen's team at their styling studio in Merkenich, north of Cologne, with updating the style of the car whilst retaining the same mechanical and structural components. The result, launched in early 1976, was the crisply-styled Taunus TC2.
The Taunus TC2 was offered with 4-cylinder 'Pinto' engines of 1.3, 1.6 or 2.0-litres capacity or the 'Cologne' V6 in either 2.0 or 2.3-litre guise and was available as the 4-door saloon, modelled here, an estate or a 2-door notchback coupe. An optional automatic gearbox was available on most models. The Ghia featured velour seats, wooden door cappings, improved external brightwork, a host of other luxury fittings and the stylish front-wing-mounted Ghia crest. The TC2 was replaced by the similar, but in detail, much improved, TC3 of 1979 and over 1.5 million of both models had been produced in mainland Europe alone before the Taunus name was finally laid to rest by Ford when the Sierra was launched in 1982.
